Princess Alexandra has become the new favourite to be the name of Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge’s first child after a surge of bets led bookmakers to slash the odds to 2/1.
Speculation over the sex and name of the next royal baby has become a hot topic ever since it was announced in December that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would be expecting their first child.
In the last 24 hours, Ladbrokes have seen a rise in bets on the name ‘Alexandra’ which has consequently seen the odds go from 10/1 to 2/1.
Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: ‘The gamble on Alexandra has come from nowhere and we’ve been forced to slash the odds accordingly.’
Ever since the announcement, many have been convinced Catherine is expecting a baby girl. Last month in Grimsby, there was a media frenzy after a member of the crowd believed The Duchess had hinted she was expecting a baby girl.
The member of the crowd told the Daily Mail: ‘The lady next to me gave her a teddy bear and I distinctly heard her say “Thank you, I will take that for my d….”.’
This led to a media storm, and the bookmakers are still believing Catherine is expecting a baby girl with odds of 1/3.
Along with Ladbrokes, Coral has experienced a similar demand in bets on the name Alexandra.
Coral’s Nicola McGeady said: “This afternoon we have been inundated with bets on Alexandra.”It’s the second biggest surge since we were forced to suspend betting on the couple having a girl.”
Currently, there is one Princess Alexandra in the royal family, sister of Prince Micheal of Kent. She is the first Alexandra in the Royal family since 1863, and carries out royal duties on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.
The Queen has already announced that if The Duke and Duchess welcome a baby girl she will be styled as “Her Royal Highness Princess..”.
The Duchess will welcome her first child in mid-July.
