Prince Harry is once again teaming up with Walking for the Wounded for another trek. The young prince, who is now fourth in line to the throne, is joining the charity organization on an expedition to Antarctica and participating in demanding tests to prepare.
As the palace confirmed to Royal Central this afternoon, “Prince Harry, as Patron of the Walking With The Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge, will take part in a 24 hour Cold Chamber Training Exercise with the British Team on 17th September. His Royal Highness will join the team inside MIRA’s whole-vehicle environmental test chambers, which simulate the extreme conditions they will face in the South Pole. He will acclimatize with the team, test equipment and practice the routine for the South Pole, including skiing and setting up camp.”
The extreme conditions in question include functioning in temperatures as low as -45 degrees Celsius and winds as high as 50 miles per hour. The 208-mile trek from South Africa to the South Pole, which will take place between November and December of 2013, will feature three teams of wounded servicemen from England, the United States, and the Commonwealth. In April, Prince Harry playfully taunted his rival teams by saying, “As a member of the British team, I will have a brew ready for you when you join us at the Pole.”
While Prince Harry previously joined Walking With The Wounded in 2011 during a trip to the North Pole, his participation was cut short due to his brother’s wedding. According to their official website, Walking With The Wounded “is a UK based charity which funds both the re-training and re-education of wounded servicemen and women with the aim of helping them find long term employment after they have left the Armed Forces.”
