The paper reported that on 4 August, William and Catherine will attend the commemorative ceremony with Prince Harry at St. Symphorien military in Mons, Belgium. The ceremony will take place on the fields that formed the backdrop to The Great War and its infamous trenches. It will be a remembrance the high loss of life as around 900,000 British lost their lives in ‘The Great War.’
Heads of State from all over Europe will also attend, and because the ceremony will take place on the actual date of the declaration of war, the event will be high-profile. Joachim Gauck, the president of Germany, and King Philippe of Belgium are among its guests, as the world commemorates the centenary of the outbreak of WWI.
As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, it is important the Queen is represented at such events. Whilst Will, Kate and Harry are in Belgium, it is thought Her Majesty will mark the event near Balmoral. Crathie Church is a small highland church where Elizabeth II will make an appearance, whilst she is staying at Balmoral for the summer. Candlelit vigils will be held in Westminster Abbey as well.
William and Catherine undertook a number of remembrance related engagements on their recent tour, including wreath laying and attending the ANZAC Day dawn service. They paid tribute to the Australian and New Zealand forces that fought for King and Country in The Great War as part of the large Commonwealth force.
Prince Harry also undertook remembrance engagements earlier this year, including one with his grandfather, The Duke of Edinburgh.
Official confirmation has yet to be given. If scheduled, an announcement from Buckingham Palace regarding the engagement will be published in due course.
